What Is the Extract Column Tool?

The Extract Column tool pulls a single column out of comma-separated, tab-separated, or any delimited text and returns just that column as a plain list. You tell it which column number to keep and what delimiter separates the fields, click Extract Column, and everything else gets stripped away. It is the kind of operation that would take several manual steps in a spreadsheet but takes about five seconds here.

It is mostly used by people working with exported CSVs, database dumps, or copied table data where they only need one field, not the whole row.

    How to Use This Tool

    1. Paste or type your delimited text into the input box above. This can be CSV data, tab-separated values, or any text where columns are split by a consistent character.
    2. Set the Column Number to the position of the column you want to keep. Columns are counted from 1, so the first column is 1, the second is 2, and so on.
    3. Set the Delimiter to match whatever character separates your columns. A comma for CSV, a tab for TSV, a pipe for pipe-delimited data, and so on.
    4. Click Extract Column and the output will contain only the values from your chosen column, one per line.
    5. Copy the result using the Copy button, or select and copy manually.

    When Would You Use This?

Pulling out just the email addresses from a CSV export that also contains names, phone numbers, and other fields you do not need right now.

Grabbing a single column of IDs or codes from tab-separated data before passing it to another tool or dropping it into a query.

Isolating one field from a copied table or exported report where opening the full thing in a spreadsheet application would take longer than just pasting it here and extracting what you need.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is a CSV column?

In a CSV file, columns are the individual fields within each row, separated by commas. So a row like "Alice,alice@email.com,London" has three columns: the name in column 1, the email in column 2, and the city in column 3.

How do I extract a column from a CSV file?

Paste your CSV content into the input box, set the column number to the position you want, set the delimiter to a comma, and click Extract Column. The output will be just that column's values, one per line.

How do I extract a specific column from a text file?

Paste the file contents into the tool, set the delimiter to whatever character separates the fields in your file (comma, tab, pipe, space, etc.), enter the column number, and click Extract Column.

    What delimiter should I use?

Match it to your data. CSV files use a comma. TSV files use a tab character. Some exports use a pipe or a semicolon. If you are not sure, look at one row of your data and find the character that separates the fields.

What does column number 1 mean?

Column 1 is the first field in each row, the leftmost one. Column 2 is the second field, and so on. The counting starts at 1, not 0.

Can I extract a column from tab-separated data?

Yes. Set the Delimiter field to a tab character and enter the column number you want. The tool handles tab-separated values the same way it handles comma-separated ones.

How do I get a list of emails from a CSV?

If your CSV has emails in, say, column 2, paste the CSV into the tool, set Column Number to 2, set Delimiter to a comma, and click Extract Column. You will get just the email addresses as a clean list.

What happens if some rows have fewer columns than others?

Rows that do not have a value at the column position you specified will typically return an empty line in the output. It is worth checking the result if your data is not perfectly consistent.

Is there a row or column limit?

No hard limit is set. For typical exports and data files, the tool handles the content without issue.
